The Devil's Paintbush
My jacket design for Jake Arnott's new book The Devil's Paintbrush published by Sceptre. In the shops now priced £15.
Paris, 1903. Major-General Sir Hector Macdonald, one of the greatest heroes of the British Empire, is facing ruin in a shocking homosexual scandal when he meets the notorious occultist, Aleister Crowley. As they set out into the night on a wild journey through the sinful city, the story of Macdonald’s tragedy begins to unfold – with startling revelations both for the General and the aspiring magician.
In a tale that ranges from the battlefields of Sudan to the backstreets of Edinburgh, Jake Arnott brings alive a fascinating, forgotten figure of history, and a world trembling on the brink of a brutal new era. Black magic, Baden-Powell and Islamic revolution are just some of the ingredients in this bold and exhilarating novel, which explores imperialism, sexuality and the very nature of belief with an immediacy that resonates into the present.

Naïve!?
I have a nice red, white n' blue double page in a new book published by Gestalten called Naïve- Modernism and Folklore in Contemporary Graphic Design. Naïve documents the extraordinary renaissance of Classic Modernism, from the 1940s to 1960s, in contemporary graphic design. This compilation introduces a new wave of young designers who are rediscovering the stylistic elements reminiscent of classic graphic design such as silkscreen printing, classical typography, hand lettering, woodcutting and folk art and integrating them into their work. Inspired by 20th Century American legends such as Saul Bass, Charley Harper and Alexander Girard, the burgeoning designers and their work showcased this in this book are inspiring, ranging from illustrations, poster art, editorials, book covers and record sleeves to stationary and textiles.

Brighton Open House
Mark Lane at Square One will be opening the doors to his lovely house at 40 Tidy St in Brighton every weekend in May 12-5pm. Mark has a fine collection of artists, illustrators & sculptors exhibiting, including Kate Gibb, Lucy Vigrass, myself and many more. For the full low down click here.
I especially love the work of Garrick Palmer (above), someone who I was not familiar with until my trip to 40 Tidy St.
